Past and present in São Francisco do Sul city, Brazil
February 2014
Walking by the streets of the Historical Centre of São Francisco do Sul, is come across the marks of a living history around the corner, all over the place. You can walk on stones that one day turned streets by the hands of slaves. You go through the same narrow streets where, in a distant past, passersby circulated doing away their livelihood. A strategic place for the Portuguese Crown in the conquest of South America.
In different times and in different ways passed by there Portuguese, Spanish, French and maybe... They were military, religious, slaves, carijós Indians, blacks, whites, nobles, commoners, young, old, which basically formed a people. They were men, women and children that one day, for some reason, did there their space and their place, their daily life, their way of life.
And there were the old buildings that still retain the marks of that time, a saved time through walls constructed of lime of sea shells, sand and whale oil... Buildings erected by missing hands... that echo marks of a past present in every corner, in every look. Read more »
For some moments I imagine myself walking those buildings and streets until I reach the Babitonga Bay. I go to the pier and sit on a bench. Some people walk around. I look at the horizon and watch the mountains. The sun is setting. I breathe deeply. There is a timeless atmosphere and a great silence makes me fix my attention on the boats moving far away... I think the ships that landed there many centuries before, in the paradisiacal scenery that there had been so... the landscape, the wealth, the natives...
How would it be? What impressions have those conquerors? And the natives, how they assimilated that fact? These are questions I ask myself and that may not be the only ones, nor they have a simple answer...
... People talk to each other next to me. For a moment I realize that I'm not alone, and that the sun has set. But there are still some rays that are reflected in the waters of the Bay. It's beautiful...
Watch the sunset at Babitonga Bay is a moment of great beauty, a great poetry. Which is capable of allowing us feelings that move ourselves in time. And that's how we feel when we are in the Historical Centre of São Francisco do Sul. A place whose history dates back to the year 1503, and configures it to be the oldest city in the State of Santa Catarina. You can be among the museums, the parks, the Church, the Market, the Fort, the Bay, the sea, the boats, the hills, the old buildings, and a people who still preserves habits, customs and food, keeps the pronunciation words... A city that keeps traditions, religious rites... and it contains so much culture.
I translate these words with a bit of the feeling I presente in images in this exhibition. Images that reveal a part of the greatness of this living historical heritage, and that brings much pride to the people of Santa Catarina. I express with this work the feeling I feel when I’m that city, and I offer to the francisquenses, people that get me so well when I'm there. Embrace!
”In particular, I thank to the Volunteer Fire Department of São Francisco do Sul, in the person of its Commander, Mr. João dos Santos Júnior, who kindly allowed me to post some images of members of that Corporation (during the 347th Procession of Nossa Senhora da Graça held on September 8, 2012), for publication on this site.”
